Saypane vs Otter.ai: transcription without the cloud

Otter.ai is one of the best known transcription services: it joins your Zoom, Teams and Google Meet calls, writes everything down in the cloud and adds AI chat, summaries and follow-ups. Saypane solves a narrower problem: a verbatim transcript, made on your own PC, that never leaves it. This page uses Otter's own website and pricing page.

Where your recordings go

With Otter, recordings and transcripts are processed and stored on Otter's servers, which is what makes its search, sharing and AI features possible. Some recordings cannot go there: research interviews covered by a consent form, client calls, patient conversations. Saypane transcribes them on the PC where they already are, and works with the network cable unplugged. Transcribing interviews privately.

Transcribing files

Otter's free plan allows 3 file imports for the lifetime of the account, and Pro allows 10 a month. Saypane has no limit on the number of files: the free version transcribes the first 15 minutes of each one, and Pro transcribes files of any length, in a batch queue if you like.

What Otter.ai does better

  • AI on top of the transcript: summaries, questions across meetings, action items and follow-ups.
  • Team features: shared notes, team vocabulary and integrations with CRMs and Zapier.
  • Every device, including phones and the browser, and live captions during a call.

Which one to choose

  • Choose Otter.ai if your team wants meeting summaries and shared notes, and the recordings may be stored in the cloud.
  • Choose Saypane if recordings must stay on your PC, you transcribe many files, or you want a one-time price instead of a subscription.
