How dictation works

Install Saypane
Get it from the Microsoft Store. The first run downloads the speech model for your language; a small model for every language is already included.

Click where you want to write
An email, a chat box, a document, an AI prompt, a form field. Any app with a text cursor.

Hold the hotkey and talk
Release it and the text appears at the cursor, with punctuation. Prefer not to hold a key? Use toggle mode: press once to start, once to stop.
Where the text goes
- Into the app you are using, through the clipboard. Your previous clipboard content is put back afterwards.
- In terminals such as Windows Terminal and PowerShell, Saypane types the characters instead, because pasting behaves differently there.
- Windows does not let normal apps type into programs that run as administrator. Saypane notices, keeps your text on the clipboard and tells you to press Ctrl+V. Why
- The microphone opens the moment you press the key, so the first word is not cut off.

What it does not do (yet)
- No typing into administrator windows. Windows blocks this for every app that does not run as administrator itself. Saypane keeps the text on the clipboard so you can paste it. Some full screen games ignore typed input as well. Details.
- Japanese and other Whisper languages need more power for dictation. Without a GPU, Saypane uses the smaller Whisper model for dictation in those languages, which makes more mistakes. File transcription can use the larger model at a slower pace. Models and hardware.
- Speaker labels depend on the recording. Clear audio with people taking turns works best. Crosstalk, similar voices and a single far-away microphone cause mistakes, so check the labels before you quote someone.
- No AI rewriting or summaries. Saypane writes down what was said. It does not rephrase your dictation or summarize meetings.
- Windows only. There is no Mac, iPhone or Android version.

Does Saypane really work offline?
Yes. Speech recognition runs on your PC. A small model is included in the app, and the larger ones are downloaded once. After that, dictation and transcription work with no network connection at all.
