Windows voice typing (Win+H) not working: 7 fixes
Windows voice typing (press Win+H) is free and works in any text box. But it is an online service: your speech is recognized on Microsoft's servers. Most failures come from that, or from a privacy setting. Go through these checks in order.
Check in this order
- You are online
- The cursor is in a text box
- Online speech recognition is allowed
- Windows can use the microphone
- "Managed by your organization"
- Windows 10 voice typing stopped for everyone
- The offline alternative
1. You are online
Microsoft's own help page says it plainly: to use voice typing, you need to be connected to the internet. On a plane, on a train, behind a strict firewall or on a VPN that blocks Microsoft's speech service, Win+H opens but nothing is typed, or it shows an error.
Open any website to check the connection. If you are on a VPN, try with it off.
2. The cursor is in a text box
Voice typing only types where there is a text cursor. Click into the text field first, then press Win+H.
3. Online speech recognition is allowed
Because recognition happens online, Windows asks for permission to send your speech.
- Windows 11: Settings, Privacy & security, Speech. Turn on Online speech recognition.
- Windows 10: Settings, Privacy, Speech. Turn on Online speech recognition.
If you turned this off on purpose because you do not want your voice to leave the PC, voice typing cannot work. Skip to the offline alternative.
4. Windows can use the microphone
If the voice typing bar listens but never types anything, Windows may be handing it silence. Check the microphone privacy switch and the input device, as described in Microphone records silence on Windows.
5. "Speech services are managed by your organization"
Users on work and school PCs report this message. It means a policy set by IT turns off online speech services. You cannot change it yourself; ask your IT department. Many organizations block cloud speech on purpose, because it sends what you say to an outside service. An app that recognizes speech locally may be allowed where the cloud service is not, but check with IT first.
6. Windows 10 voice typing stopped for everyone
In 2026 a Reddit thread about Windows 10 voice typing collected 25 comments, 16 of them reporting the same failure at the same time. Some suspected that Microsoft had ended voice typing on Windows 10. We could not confirm the cause. If your settings are right and it still fails on Windows 10, the problem may not be on your PC at all, and no setting will fix it.
That is the risk of dictation that depends on an online service: when the service changes or goes down, typing by voice stops.
7. The offline alternative
If you need dictation that does not depend on an internet connection or a remote service, use an app that runs the speech model on your PC. Saypane is one: hold a hotkey, talk, and the text appears in any app, like Win+H. The difference is that recognition happens on your computer, so it works offline, on locked-down networks and on Windows 10. Dictation is free with no word limit.
What Win+H does better: it is already installed and costs nothing at all, and on Copilot+ PCs it also corrects grammar and filler words in English. Saypane and Windows voice typing compared.
Questions
Does Windows voice typing work offline?
No. Microsoft states that voice typing needs an internet connection. On Copilot+ PCs, the Fluid dictation feature uses a small on-device model to correct grammar and punctuation, in English only, but recognition itself still needs the connection.
Why does voice typing put a period after every pause?
Automatic punctuation guesses sentence ends from pauses. Users often complain that it adds a period whenever they stop to think. You can turn automatic punctuation off in the voice typing settings (the gear in the voice typing bar) and say punctuation instead.
