Microphone records silence on Windows: how to fix it
If an app records but the result is empty, Windows is often giving it silence on purpose. The microphone privacy switch blocks apps without an error message: the recording simply contains nothing. Saypane detects a silent recording and points you here.
1. The microphone privacy switch
Windows 11
- Open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone, and make sure Saypane is on in the list.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Windows 10
- Open Settings, then Privacy, then Microphone.
- Under "Allow access to the microphone on this device", click Change and turn it on.
- Turn on Allow apps to access your microphone, and make sure Saypane is on in the list.
- Turn on Allow desktop apps to access your microphone.
On a work PC these switches may be greyed out by a company policy. In that case, ask your IT department.
2. The right input device
- Open Settings, System, Sound, and look under Input. Pick the microphone you are speaking into and talk: the volume bar should move.
- If it does not move, check the input volume, a mute switch on the headset or the cable, and the mute key on the laptop keyboard.
- In Saypane, choose the same microphone in the settings, or leave it on the Windows default.
3. Bluetooth headsets
Many Bluetooth headsets switch to a lower quality "hands-free" mode when their microphone is used, and some only offer the microphone through a separate device entry. If the headset microphone stays silent, pick the entry with "Hands-Free" in its name, or use the laptop's built-in microphone to test.
4. Another app holds the microphone
A program using the microphone in exclusive mode can keep others out. Close video call apps and recorders, then try again. In the device properties (Sound settings, More sound settings, Recording, your microphone, Properties, Advanced) you can untick Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
5. Still silent
Restart the PC after changing privacy settings. If the volume bar in Settings never moves with any app, the problem is the device or its driver: try another USB port, another microphone, or the driver from the PC maker's website.
Questions
Why is there no error message?
Windows does not tell an app that the privacy switch blocked it; the app receives silence instead. That is why Saypane checks recordings for silence and tells you when it looks like the switch is off.
